Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance

Interactive Webinar Discuss and Disseminate – Series 4

23 April 2021 | 3.00 pm – 4.15 pm IST

Background:

The growing water scarcity across the country prompted the Government of India to launch National Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure India’s water security and to provide access to safe and adequate drinking water to all Indians at affordable service delivery charges, thus leading to an improvement in the living standards of communities. The decline in water availability and its reduced quality, associated with a rise in population growth, vast expansion of industrial and agricultural activities, and climate change-driven hydrological cycle alterations have become a global phenomenon. Hence, monitoring and surveillance of water quality is now imperative, leading to communities prioritising it as much as access to water.

As water quality monitoring systems are significant in terms of operation of water supply, the verification of the safety of drinking water, and investigation of disease outbreaks, preventive measures and validation are governed by public, private and community-led agencies. Hence it is mandatory to understand the monitoring and surveillance protocol for the successful implementation of the mission to fulfil the objective of long–term drinking water security in India.

The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), an institution of academic excellence, wants to enable a cross-learning functional update in water quality systems in order to empower stakeholders with regard to methodical monitoring and service delivery in achieving the goal of the National Jal Jeevan mission.

Objective:

Encourage key institutions and relevant stakeholders to focus on the critical areas in water quality monitoring and surveillance.
